Just finished my latest read, The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, and I have to say I am disappointed with this book. I think I had set my hopes too high after her triology - Shiver, Linger and Forever. These books were great, and I couldn't wait to get to the next one. The characters were well developed and the pages wouldn't turn fast enough.
But back to this one, at the end of the book in her Author's Notes, the author talks about how she tried to write this story a few times and failed. It was like she had this one partly completed and was compelled to publish again and pulled it out. I had to keep reading it, as I was hoping the characters would develop and tell me their story.
There were many interesting characters and a very mysterious legend about Water Horses "capall uisce", (which I still have a hard time pronouncing) and yet it felt like the story was rushing to the end without explaining anyone in it. I felt no character was given the justice they deserved, I wanted to know more about them, and what their story was. I still want to know!
And finally, the ending ... it could have ended many ways, and in the end it was the easy one. It felt rushed as well, the whole story led up to a major event, and then it was finished.
My recommendation ... read Maggie Stiefvater's other triology (noted above) ... and if you really want to, read this one afterwards, and then you will know what I mean. And if you don't ... please let me know!
I am now struggling with what to read next ... I have many a book waiting for me ... but when I have read one that is disappointing ... it is hard to get into the next read. I think it will have to be an easy read ... something quick, and without as much hope attached to it.
If you have a suggestion, let me know ... or stay tuned and find out what I chose!
Thanks for new author to me , I have not read any of her work , but will look for the trilogy an start there.
ReplyDeleteI just finished My Korean Deli, by Ben Ryder Howe, a book that not a lot happens but truly a lot does happen.
waiting to see what you start next.
Nic - read "The Windup Bird Chronicles" by Haruki Mirakami! So good.
ReplyDeleteThanks for both suggestions ... will have a look. Watched "Justifed" epsiode last night instead of reading. Will make the decision tonight! It is between 12.21.12 - Killian McRae or The Midwife of Venice - Roberta Rich.
ReplyDeleteHi Nic--I read the Midwife of Venice and enjoyed this quick read. Interesting look at Catholics vs Jews and a nice trip to Malta in there to boot! Mae
DeleteI have that one on my list to read ... glad to hear it was good! Will move it up the list
